“The Accidental Invention of the Backpack”

Long ago, in a tiny mountain village, a scatterbrained tinkerer named Tobias had a problem: he was terrible at carrying things. Whether it was apples, firewood, or tools, Tobias would always drop, spill, or lose something along the way. The villagers laughed, calling him “Tobias Two-Trips” because he could never carry everything at once.

One crisp autumn morning, Tobias decided to gather herbs for his latest experiment—a tea that might make chickens lay golden eggs. Armed with jars, tools, and a rolled-up blanket, he trudged up the hill. But as usual, chaos followed. By the time he reached the first tree, a jar had rolled downhill, his blanket dangled awkwardly, and his tools were scattered across the path. Frustrated, Tobias flopped down on the ground, head in hands.

His donkey, Percy, strolled by with saddlebags filled to the brim. Tobias stared at Percy, marveling at how easily the donkey carried everything without dropping a thing. “Why can’t I carry my stuff like that?” he grumbled. Then, inspiration struck.

Tobias ran back to his workshop and grabbed an old cloth sack. With a needle and thread, he attached two long straps to the sack. He slipped the straps over his shoulders, adjusted the sack onto his back, and carefully filled it with his tools and jars. It wasn’t perfect—his shoulders ached, and the sack wobbled—but Tobias managed to reach the herb field without dropping a single item. For the first time, he carried everything in one trip.

The villagers were amazed. Soon, Tobias was making “back-sacks” for hunters, farmers, and travelers alike. His simple idea changed how people carried things forever.
